Round 2: SBA Suggestion Box Comments Revealed!

Dear Loyolans:

You've spoken, and we've listened. Here's a list of SBA Suggestion Box suggestions/comments and our responses. Keep them coming and email me if you have any questions or further suggestions/comments. Good luck with finals!

Q: The smoking areas need cover from the rain! A: The smoking areas currently have umbrellas in the tables, but we will talk to the powers that be to see if there’s something else we can do about the smoking area by Donovan Hall. We may have to work with the umbrellas for the foreseeable future.

Q: Can we get a 24 Hour Library? A: Hall of the '70s is open 24 hours upon request. Please visit the security desk in the parking garage for assistance.

Q: Can we get refunds for paper? A: Students are not actually allocated a dollar amount for printing, although the amount of available printing each student has left is measured in $ units. This is why there is no refund or carry-over if you do not use up all of your printing during the school year. Loyola students are allocated 3,000 free pages per year in the Rains Computer Lab. Visit here http://library.lls.edu/crc/CRCprinting.html for a full explanation.

Q: The library is freezing! More heat? A: Please visit the circulation desk on the first floor and ask a library employee to turn the heat up.

Q: URGENT! We need recent practice exams for Torts, Property and Contracts. The last Torts exam that we have is almost 20 years old! A: Practice exams for various subjects can be found on the Rains Library homepage at http://library.lls.edu/. Scroll to the bottom of the page and look for where is says “Past Exams.” You can search by Course Name and see all of the exams posted for that subject. This should help! Otherwise, contact your professors.

Q: The campus bookstore should stock little packages of tissues! A: We formally asked the new bookstore manager to address this, so look for little packages of tissues next semester.

Q: Why wasn't there more food at Turf Club? A: Clubs try to order for 300 people, but sometimes more people come or they come back for seconds, thirds, and even FOURTHS! We are looking into instituting a system that allows people to go through the line only twice, such as marking your hand just like we do with the alcoholic beverages. Working on it!

Q: Why don't we have a gym? A: One word: liability.

Q: Why aren't ESBA minutes posted? A: ESBA meets every two weeks, as opposed to DSBA which meets weekly, but the minutes are posted on www.voiceofloyola.com. Keep your eyes peeled!

Thanks, everyone!

Nicole Papincak, DSBA Secretary

Dining Services Committee Vendor Selection - Bon Appétit

For the past two months, the Dining Services Committee has undertaken the task of selecting a dining vendor to take over Sonia's Cafe. After many hours of review and deliberation, we are proud to announce that Bon Appétit Management Company has been recommended and selected by Dean Gold as the new vendor. It was a fortunate, but difficult dilemma as both Bon Appétit and Culinart offered attractive proposals.

The Committee felt that Bon Appétit's "Food First" philosophy and commitment to sustainable food service practices were consistent with the practices and beliefs of our School. Most importantly, Bon Appétit's food was delicious.

One of the critical considerations while undergoing this review process was the status of the existing Sonia's employees. Bon Appétit has offered to hire all current Sonia's employees if they wish to work with the new company and after they complete a standard background check.

Bon Appétit will begin the transition of taking over Sonia's during Winter Break and begin service on January 4, 2010. Two Town Hall sessions will be scheduled early next semester to answer any questions that students and faculty may have about the selection process.

On behalf of the Dining Services Committee, please join me in welcoming Bon Appétit to the Loyola Law School community.

Regards,
Tony Lai

SBA Suggestion Box Comments Revealed!

Dear Loyola Students:

As some of you may have noticed, SBA put a fancy shmancy suggestion box on our library's circulation desk. Omid, your SBA VP, and I thought we did a great decorating job until the library one-uped us with shiny gold decorations and bigger letters. . . anyway, some of you have done a great job of taking advantage of this suggestion box by telling SBA what YOU WANT.

Here are the comments and suggestions we've received thus far, with responses from SBA!

1. Q: How can I contact my 2L rep about a bar review for my Evidence Class?

A: If you'd like to organize something with your 2L Evidence section, contact your class's SBA 2L Rep:
Goldman - Renee Pratt, reneep821@gmail.com
Gold - Vickie Chan, vickiechan101@gmail.com
Cammack - Liz Treckler, liz.treckler@gmail.com
Williams - Claire Ettema, oneclaire@gmail.com

2. Q: Are there 2 SBAs?

A: The day and evening sections of LLS each have their own representative body, DSBA and ESBA. DSBA board members are elected by day students, and ESBA board members are elected by evening students. While each representative body dedicates part of its work to benefit the students it represents, DSBA and ESBA also work together for the good of the entire student body. DSBA and ESBA confer every week to discuss common goals, social events, and issues affecting both day and evening students. Contact us for more information!

3. Q: Why don't we have a website for SBA?

A: SBA is proud to announce that a website is forthcoming! Please also visit www.voiceofloyola.com, which is the destination for all things LLS. Here, you can access a calendar of events and blogposts about the goings-on on campus.

4. Q: How about a Women of Loyola Calendar...

A: How about a Students of Loyola Calendar?!

5. "You guys are awesome"

A: SBA thanks you for this comment!

6. Q: Hey, Loyola smokers, can you please use the ashtrays?

A: No one likes to clean up after other people. Please, Loyola smokers, do your best to use the ashtrays that are provided to you, and cleaned out by, our great staff members. SBA will work on having signs put up in the smoking areas as well.

7. "I think Loyola should get a mechanical bull"

A: Although this may not happen on our campus, there's this great little place in Hollywood called Saddle Ranch that will fulfill all of your mechanical bull needs.

Thanks to everyone who contributed and keep the comments and suggestions coming!

Internet Troubles on Campus

UPDATE 2: Ok Facebook is back and not a moment to soon. I was about to reactivate my myspace account....

UPDATE: It looks like we're getting conflicting messages from the administration. That combined with the fact that Facebook wont load at all means that the jury is still out on this one. Stay tuned...

Not to worry Loyolans,

Due to some issues with the internet on campus today rumors have been flying around that Loyola is blocking Facebook.

SBA has spoken with IT and it turns out that outgoing traffic is overwhelming the servers and things should be back to normal soon.

And not a moment to soon...
